CILER Spotlight: A Letter from CILER’S New Director, Dr. Bradley Cardinale

Since becoming Director of UM-NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Limnology & Ecosystems Research (CILER) this past May, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the challenges and opportunities we face in managing the Great Lakes. We are fortunate to live near the single largest source of surface freshwater on the planet, which provides a source of drinking water, recreation, inspiration, and identity for tens of millions of people. READ MORE.

2016 CILER Summit Series 

CILER launched a new Summit Series that convenes interdisciplinary experts from around the Great Lakes to focus on identifying research and management priorities to achieve sustainability in the Great Lakes.  Three summits were held in 2016, centered on forecasting extreme events, ecosystem services, and observing systems. Alicia Ritzenthaler Recognized by State of Michigan

CILER staff member Alicia Ritzenthaler was recently recognized at the Harrison Township Environmental Committee's annual awards ceremony, receiving a special tribute from the State of Michigan for her bacterial water quality monitoring efforts in Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River watershed. Lake Erie Algal Toxin Analysis in Near Real-Time

The first robotic autonomous algal toxin analysis instrument in the Great Lakes made its field debut in September. Located near the Toledo drinking water intake, the ESPniagara provides the critical, real-time data needed for a toxin early warning system. The early warning system will alert managers of potential water quality issues earlier than previously possible, leading to more timely decision-making and greater protection for the public. Assessing the Risk of Asian Carp Invasion in the Great Lakes

As the invasive Asian carp threatens to invade the Laurentian Great Lakes, CILER Research Scientist Dr. Hongyan Zhang and colleagues developed a model to predict the effects of Asian carp on the Lake Erie food web.  If Asian carp reach Lake Erie, the model suggests that in only 20 years Asian carp could reach their peak biomass and compose nearly 30% of the total fish biomass, ultimately causing a decline in the important sport and commercial fisheries. READ MORE.
