Celebrating a Career in Great Lakes Research

Dr. Thomas Johengen has been a Research Scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR, formerly the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER)) at the University of Michigan since 1991, and this fall has taken leadership of Michigan Sea Grant as their new Director. Throughout his career, Tom has led many exciting research projects and has mentored countless numbers of students, technicians, administrators and scientists. His role as an advisor and Great Lakes science mentor has motivated, challenged and afforded incredible experiences and opportunities to those lucky enough to work alongside him. We’ve collected statements from just a few of these people in the full article. In addition to his new role as Michigan Sea Grant Director, Tom will maintain a half time research appointment with CIGLR working on selected projects. We look forward to many years of continued collaboration with Tom and congratulate him on his esteemed career and this well-deserved honor of directing Michigan Sea Grant. READ MORE

2019 Great Lakes Summer Fellow Video Series

In partnership with NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), CIGLR hosts a cohort of students each summer to participate in the Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program. This video series highlights CIGLR’s 2019 program, fellows, research, and career training opportunities that equips students with the knowledge and skills to be the next generation of Great Lakes scientists. READ MORE

Great Lakes Gliders Help Monitor Water Quality and Inform Hydrodynamic Models

Lauren Marshall is a CIGLR Research Assistant and former 2019 Great Lakes Summer Fellow working with Lacey Mason (NOAA GLERL) and Russ Miller (CIGLR) to process and archive historical glider data (autonomous underwater vehicles or AUVs) and make them accessible to the public. CIGLR and NOAA GLERL have deployed gliders in Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Ontario since 2012, ultimately supporting a range of operations including detecting harmful algal blooms; ensuring safe navigation; supporting offshore energy operations, anglers, and fisheries management; and enhancing public health and safety. By making these data open access, they can be easily used by collaborators, scientists within the CIGLR and NOAA organizations, and stakeholders across the Great Lakes basin. READ MORE

Using Environmental DNA and RNA to Inform Biomonitoring and Bioassessment Management Plans

Nate Marshall is a CIGLR postdoctoral research fellow working with Drs. Hank Vanderploeg (NOAA GLERL), Ed Rutherford (NOAA GLERL), and Rao Chaganti (CIGLR) to develop new techniques to improve ecological understanding and environmental monitoring of invasive species, foodweb dynamics, and plankton community composition in the Great Lakes. Currently, Nate and his team are using mesocosm experiments to explore how much eDNA and eRNA invasive dreissenids (zebra and quagga mussels) shed into their environment and how long it persists. These techniques will be used to inform biomonitoring and bioassessment management plans. READ MORE
