FEATURED RESEARCH

CIGLR’s Research Staff Provide Critical Information on Lake Erie’s Harmful Algal Blooms During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Stakeholders in western Lake Erie rely on CIGLR staff to provide critical information on harmful algal blooms (HABs), helping them to deliver high-quality drinking water to surrounding communities. In partnership with NOAA GLERL, CIGLR staff monitor HAB conditions and provide data that help stakeholders such as public water facilities in western Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, use these natural resources safely. This essential work, like most aspects of our lives, required major adjustments and creativity during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. READ MORE

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Update
Water Quality Modeling in the Great Lakes

Timothy Maguire is a CIGLR Postdoctoral Research Fellow working to understand large-scale management of the Great Lakes through water quality modeling. Water quality research is an exercise in data extremes. For several years, CIGLR and NOAA GLERL have been collecting water quality data throughout western Lake Erie at regular intervals throughout the summer-fall seasons when water quality issues peak. Starting with phosphorus concentrations, this research involves connecting data to other regional datasets and developing a model that incorporates the physics of water movement in the lake.
