Biophysical Modeling Analyst

Summary

We are seeking an individual to join our ecological and physical modeling teams at the University of Michigan’s Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (NOAA GLERL). Under the direction of project principal investigators, the Biophysical Modeling Analyst will work collaboratively with CIGLR and NOAA GLERL scientists to:

Develop experimental ecological forecasts linked to the hydrodynamic models of the Great Lakes Operational Forecast System.
Evaluate model performance through statistical comparison of modeled and observed water quality, biological, and physical variables. These models simulate ecological and limnological processes within the Great Lakes including water quality, harmful algal blooms, and biogeochemical processes, among others.
This position can be filled at the Research Laboratory Specialist Associate or Intermediate level depending on experience.

This position is open only to US Citizens or permanent residents due to federal security clearance required for access to NOAA GLERL facilities and resources.

 

Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences, engineering, or related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
    • At least one (1) year professional or academic experience processing, analyzing, and visualizing ecological and/or oceanographic datasets.
    • Experience working with coupled hydrodynamic and ecological models for lakes or oceans is preferred.
    • Experience using programming languages (e.g., R or Python) to perform data manipulation, execute statistical analyses, and generate figures, including geographical data.
    • Experience in an academic research and/or professional setting working with code and/or output for geophysical fluid dynamic (lake, ocean, atmosphere) or aquatic ecological models.
    • Familiarity with hydrodynamic/ocean modeling frameworks such as FVCOM is preferred.
    • Experience recording scholarly productivity commensurate with career stage, including co-authorship on peer-reviewed manuscripts is preferred.
    • Experience running mechanistic ecological models using a high-performance computing system is preferred.
Salary Range: $50,000 – $67,000. Salary will be determined based on experience and level.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial and Molecular Ecology

Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Postdoctoral Fellow position. The successful candidate will play a key role in our dynamic research team and contribute to developing cutting edge tools for environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis for monitoring invasive species and toxin-producing cyanobacteria species in the Great Lakes. The project objectives include development of eDNA-based high throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) assays and metabarcoding assays for conservation and management of species of interest in the Great Lakes.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr.Subba Rao Chaganti from the University of Michigan and collaborators from the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab and the United States Geological Survey.

Term Appointment: This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on performance.

 

Qualifications

    • Doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular ecology, biological oceanography, or a related field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
    • Fluency in molecular biology techniques and developing assays for species of interest.
    • Experience in high-throughput sequencing platforms and metabarcoding data analysis.
    • Proficiency in bioinformatics processes and statistical analyses.  
    • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Proficient in data visualization and interpretation.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Great Lakes Hydrodynamic Modeling 

Summary

A postdoctoral fellowship is available for a qualified individual to join the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR: https://ciglr.seas.umich.edu/). You will work with the ecosystem modeling team to improve our capacity for integrated Earth system modeling in the Great Lakes region. In particular, you will calibrate and test a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for Lake Michigan-Huron utilizing the newest version of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory’s (GFDL) Modular Ocean Model (MOM6). This position is in support of NOAA’s Climate and Ecosystem Fisheries Initiative (CEFI). You will collaborate with biophysical modelers at other NOAA labs in the development of a coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical ecosystem model for the Great Lakes using the larger NOAA-GFDL framework. You will be expected to maintain a record of scholarly publication and presentations at scientific conferences and public meetings.

You will spend the majority of your time at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor and will collaborate closely with colleagues at CIGLR, GLERL, SEAS, and other Great Lakes partners.

The position is expected to start in summer 2024, reporting to Dr. David Cannon. The initial appointment is for one year, with opportunity for extension for the second-year contingent on performance. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come first-served basis until the position is filled.

 

Qualifications

    • A Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, biogeochemistry, or a similar field.
    • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization in a scripting environment using R, Python, or similar software.
    • Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to lead the development of manuscripts for referred journal publication.
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently.
