Great Lakes AI Lab

Grounded in the values of collaboration and innovation, the CIGLR Great Lakes AI Lab harnesses machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to address environmental challenges and hazards facing the Great Lakes and the communities they support.

The Great Lakes AI Lab serves as a regional hub for collaboration across the Great Lakes science community, uniting researchers to harness artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in support of freshwater research and management. Every day, satellites, buoys, sensors, and computer models collect enormous amounts of information about the lakes. The AI Lab helps make sense of this data by building smart tools that can detect patterns, make predictions, and uncover insights that would otherwise go unnoticed. By creating a shared, open-source workspace for scientists, the Lab helps improve forecasts, strengthen observing networks, and make lake research faster and more connected than ever before, all while keeping expert knowledge and human oversight at the center of every discovery.

The Lab’s applications are already helping address some of the region’s most pressing challenges, from predicting extreme water levels to designing smarter observing networks that guide where and how sensors are deployed. These advances help coastal communities prepare for changing conditions and guide how we manage and protect the lakes. Supported by NOAA, CIGLR, and regional partners, the Great Lakes AI Lab represents a major investment in innovation and collaboration. By combining technology and teamwork, this effort is helping scientists and citizens alike better understand, predict, and care for the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater system on Earth.
